Ignoring US objections, the arms embargo on Iran has expired

Tehran has claimed that the arms embargo imposed on Iran by the UN Security Council has expired.

The country’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement Sunday that the arms embargo had been automatically lifted as of today as it expired.

Al Jazeera reports that despite strong US efforts, the arms embargo on Iran has not been extended.

Tehran claims that the UN arms embargo on Iran was lifted on October 17 in accordance with Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with six nations, including the United States, and UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

The lifting of the ban means that Iran will now be able to buy and sell conventional weapons, including missiles, helicopters and tanks, from any country without any legal impediment.

In 2016, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the GCPOA agreement and imposed tough economic sanctions on Iran. The Donald Trump administration has used every means at its disposal to impose an arms embargo on Iran. Top US officials, including Trump-Pompeo, have repeatedly waged a kind of cold war against Iran since 2019.

Last August, the United States made a proposal to the Security Council to extend the arms embargo indefinitely. However, two countries with veto power, China and Russia, vehemently oppose the proposal.

Eight other members of the 14-member Security Council, including France, Germany and the United Kingdom, avoided the proposal. Only the Dominican Republic supported the United States proposal.

A statement from Iran’s Foreign Ministry called on the United States to refrain from applying anti-Iranian measures, ignoring protests from the international community.

Analysts say the arms trade and geopolitics in the Middle East could become more aggressive after Iran lifts its arms embargo.
