Balwinder Singh’s wife, Karamjit Kaur, wants to present a turban of honor to West Bengal’s Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee. West Bengal politics was abuzz with debate over the “turban” after the BJP’s Nabanna campaign.
Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar fueled that debate. BJP took to the field. They tried to politicize the issue by accusing it of hurting the feelings of the Sikh community.
However, the situation changed completely on Saturday. Forgetting pride, the Balbinder family now wants to gift a turban of respect and love to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Balbinder, however, is still in police custody. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Monday.
Meanwhile, Mamata’s ‘gift of affection’ reached Balbinder’s wife and children yesterday. Mamata’s envoy also gave them the message to be by his side in the whole situation. After that, Karamjit removed the anger and protest.
He said yesterday that he would meet Mamata and give her a turban. Karamjit said, Mamata Banerjee gave us gifts during Durga Puja. I feel honored. He gave me a salwar suit, kurta pajamas and a shawl for our son. I would also like to meet him and give him a turban.
Earlier on the day of the BJP’s ‘Nabanna Cholo’ campaign, the police clashed with activists and supporters of the BJP. Balbinder was in that procession. The police had a fight with him. The turban fell from her head with a jerk.
Police later said a 9mm handgun was recovered from Balbinder. His license is from Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir. Balbindar cannot go to another state in the country with that license. According to the BJP, Balwinder is the security guard for one of their youth leaders. But the police responded by saying that the youth leader could not have an armed private security guard. Even if you can, you can’t go to a place where section 144 is in effect with that security guard.
However, beyond the logic of the law, the matter quickly fell under Sikh sentiment. The image of Balbinder taking off his turban was widely discussed in the media.
Part of the Sikh community began to protest. Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh tweeted the incident. According to them, the police removed the turban from Balbinder’s head. What a heinous crime and a lack of respect for the Sikh community.
Considering the situation, the Chief Minister himself went out into the field. As seen in many incidents in the past, the position of the Balwinder family has changed 180 degrees. In fact, the protest rally proposed by the Sikh community has also been canceled following the decision of the Chief Minister.
Balwinder’s family hopes that he will be granted bail if he appears in court on Monday.
