Dhaka: Awami League (ship symbol) candidate Kazi Monirul Islam Manu has been unofficially elected with 45,642 votes in the by-elections of the Dhaka-5 constituency. His closest rival, BNP nominee Salahuddin Ahmed (symbol of the sheaf of rice) garnered 2,926 votes.

The results were announced privately on behalf of the Electoral Commission (EC) at the capital’s Donia University College on Saturday night (October 17). Among other candidates, Mir Abdus Sabur (symbol of the plow) of the Jatiya Party obtained 413 votes, Anshar Rahman Sikder (symbol of the sole) of the Bangladesh Congress obtained 49 votes and Arifur Rahman Sumon Master (symbol of the handle) of the National People’s Party obtained 111 votes.

Voting took place from nine in the morning until five in the afternoon. Voters exercised their right to vote through electronic voting machines (EVM) in 64 voting booths in 16 centers. The absence of voters in the electoral college was noted throughout the day. According to the announced results, 10.43 percent of the votes have been cast.

On May 8, the death of Habibur Rahman Mollah vacated the Dhaka-5 post. Then, on September 3, the Electoral Commission (EC) announced the calendar of the by-elections in this constituency.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) consists of 47, 49, 50, 60, 61, 72, 64, 65, 6, 7, 8, 69 and 70 districts (Demra and Motijheel). The total number of voters in this constituency is 4 lakh 61,129 people. Of these, 2 lakh 41,474 are male and 2 lakh 29,754 are female voters.
