New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern won a landslide victory in Saturday’s election. This is probably the first time in decades that a one-party government has been formed in the country.
The Reuters news agency and AFP released this information.
Analysts claim that people have re-elected him as Prime Minister because of his great success in fighting the coronavirus epidemic. Through this, he had the opportunity to implement his reform agenda.
Two-thirds of the votes were counted. Of which 49.2% of the vote was received by the Ardern Labor Party. In other words, his party fared worse than expected according to opinion polls, which saw him win about 64 of 120 seats in parliament.
This is the first time in New Zealand that a party has won so many seats since the proportional voting system of 1996.
Bryce Edwards, a political commentator at Victoria University in Wellington, said it was a historic turning point. Through this a new foundation has been created.
Saturday’s elections were supposed to be held in September. But due to the new Covid-19 outbreak, the vote was postponed for a month.
In New Zealand’s current electoral system, it is difficult for any party to obtain a single majority. But Ardern’s current popularity suggests that his party could win the majority.
Voting for New Zealand’s new parliament begins at 9 a.m. local time on Saturday and continues until 6 p.m.
Previously, early voting began on October 3. More than 1 million people have also given their verdict there.
In addition to electing representatives, New Zealand voters on Saturday had to vote in two referenda on the legalization and control of marijuana.
