Death by ‘police torture’

A witness GNC driver described what happened that night to Raihan, a young man who died in “police torture.” The driver and another accomplice were patrolling that night in two CNG automatic vehicles with two police teams from the Bandar Bazar outpost in Sylhet. The police took Raihan to the outpost in an autorickshaw.

The police pulled Raihan out of the alley and into the outpost in a second autorickshaw. Raihan was in a healthy body then. After Raihan was taken inside the police outpost, two autorickshaw drivers waited outside the outpost. Later in the morning, Raihan was taken to Osmani Hospital in an autorickshaw by one of the two drivers in critical condition.

The autorickshaw driver added that Raihan’s condition worsened after he was taken to the hospital and given oxygen. Earlier, while pulling Raihan out of the outpost, the driver saw signs of injuries below the knees and fingers. After the incident, the family complained against the police and Raihan died due to police torture. Later that night, Raihan’s wife, Tahmina Akhter Tani, presented a case.

Four people, including SI Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, in charge of the Bandar Bazar outpost, were suspended and three others were removed.

The deceased was identified as Raihan Akhalia, son of the late Rafiqul Islam of Neharipara. Raihan used to work at a diagnostic center at Stadium Market in Sylhet town. He also performed his duties as usual on Saturday. His family members were concerned that he would not come home that night.
