A midwife living at the Natidanga residence in Alamdanga reportedly sold her newborn son. The newborn was sold to a couple from a nearby village in Goalbari through a local BRAC health worker. The husband said that he had sold the child because he did not want a child, but the locals said that the mother had sold another child 3 years ago.
It was learned that Minara Khatun (32), wife of Khairul Islam, lives in Room No. 5, Shed No. 4, Natidanga House, Baradi Union, Alamdanga Upazila, Chuadanga District. Minara Khatun is the second wife of Khairul Islam. Khairul Islam lives in the same village as his first wife. Minara was admitted to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital on Wednesday morning along with local BRAC nurse Hena Khatun and Amela Khatun, wife of Barek Ali, a resident of the residence. She gave birth to a son around 8 in the morning. Minara Khatun immediately handed over her newborn son to BRAC nurse Hena Khatun.
Minara Khatun said: “After finding out that I was pregnant, my husband left me 6 months ago and went with his first wife. He doesn’t come here anymore. Sometimes we talk on cell phones. My husband has told me that he will accept me as soon as I have a daughter. But since I have a son, I have given birth to a boy. The boy is sick now. It will pay if you are healthy.
Khairul Islam, the father of the newborn, said: “I have 3 children from my first wife. The second wife also has a son. I don’t want to have children anymore. However, I don’t know if my son has been sold.
Hena Khatun, a nurse from Alamdanga Upazila BRAC, said: “I went with them to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital because they called me on their mobile phones.” After the child was born, Minara asked her to give her child to someone else. Later I gave the child to Bulbuli Khatun, the wife of Monwar Hossain from neighboring Goalbari village, who had no children.
Kashem Ali, who lives in the same residence, said that Minara Khatun sold her first child in the Kushtia area four years ago for 40,000 taka.
Muktijoddha Abdar Khan, chairman of the housing management committee, alleged that Khairul Islam’s wife, Minara Khatun, gave birth to a child a few years ago. That boy also sold Minara Khatun for 40 lakhs. The boy has started selling as a profession. Legal action must be taken against Minaret.
Local Baradi UP President Masud Parvez said: “I have heard from people in the area that Minara Khatun gives birth to children and sells them.” You need to be tried according to the law.
Alamdanga Upazila Nirbahi officer Liton Ali said: “I did not know the matter.” I’m giving the responsibility to the women’s officer to act. The matter will be investigated and action taken.
