TangailA court sentenced five defendants to death in a gang rape case after abducting a student from the madrasa in Bhunapur upazila of Tangail.

Judge Khaleda Yasmin delivered the verdict at 11:30 am on Thursday (October 15).

At the same time, each of the convicts has been fined one lakh of rupees.

The convicts are Sagar Chandra Shil, son of Sunil Chandra Shil from Golabari village in Madhupur upazila of Tangail, Gopi Chandra Shil, son of Digen Chandra Shil, Sanjit Chandra Manrishi, son of Badal Chandra Manrishi from Charaljani village, Sujan Manrishi , son of Sunil Manrishi.

Among them, Sanjit Chandra Manrishi and Gopi Chandra Shil were present at the court. After the verdict was announced, they were sent to jail. The other three defendants have been released on bail and have gone into hiding.

AKM Nasimul Akhter, Special Government Tactician (PP) of the Court for Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children, told banglanews that a madrasa student from Bhunapur met Sagar Sheel in 2012 via mobile phone. Sagar arrived in Bhunapur on January 15 of the same year and took the girl to Madhupur. Sagar wants to take the girl to Rajan’s house in Madhupur’s Charaljani village and marry her. But Sagar raped her because he did not agree to the marriage. The girl was later detained there. On the night of January 17, Madhupur was taken to the banks of the Bangshai River and five people, including Sagar, raped the girl and left her behind. The next morning (January 18), the locals rescued the girl. Later his parents arrived and took him home. On the same day (January 18), the student herself became a plaintiff and filed a case against five people under the Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children Act at the Bhunapur Police Station. The police arrested the defendant Sujan on the day the case was filed. Sujan confessed to being involved in the incident. Later, other defendants were also arrested.

After the investigation, the police from the Bhunapur Police Station filed a charge sheet against five people and on October 29, 2015, charges were filed against them. The court approved the verdict on Thursday, as the allegations were proven after the hearing.

The plaintiff in the case received legal assistance from the Bangladesh Human Rights Implementation Agency, said Ataur Rahman Azad, general secretary of the organization’s district branch.

He said they were satisfied with the verdict. They have received a fair trial. On the other hand, the defendants’ lawyer, Golam Mostafa Mia, said they could not be satisfied with the verdict. They will appeal against the verdict in higher court.
