One month after destabilizing the onion market in Bangladesh, India has again announced a conditional decision to export onions. However, only two special varieties of onions can be brought in via waterways. Importers of the country are unhappy with the condition imposed as last year. Also, now that onions are being imported from countries like Myanmar, Pakistan and China, importers have enough questions about whether these two lesser-known varieties of onions from India can be brought to market. However, the Chittagong importers have decided not to take that risk even if they want to think.

This year the largest amount of onion has been produced in the country’s history, says the Ministry of Agriculture. Imports were closed for only three months due to the crown. Before that, in the full onion season, thousands of tons of onions were imported every day as soon as the Corona barrier was lifted. Even after importing more onions than the country’s total demand, India stopped exporting onions, so the price of all kinds of onions in Eklafe now exceeds Rs 60. However, to control this situation, the government has allowed the simultaneous importation of onions from different countries of the world. Due to the huge production of onions this year, there is confusion in all sectors about the actual deficit. No matter the crisis, there are still a lot of onions in the merchants’ houses. As a result, most importers are not interested in responding to the diversion that India is trying to increase the cost of Bangladeshi importers on behalf of onion export opportunities. Apart from Chittagong, Bhomra in Satkhira, Sonamasjid in Chapainawabganj and Hili in Dinajpur showed no interest in importing onions by river or sea. They said they would not import onions because it was an unknown route. However, Chittagong port importers, especially Khatunganj, do not agree with a word even though they see the risk of importing through this diversion. They want to think about it by analyzing the risks.

After a month-long suspension of onion exports, India was informed on Sunday that it would no longer export onions by land. However, they are interested in exporting two varieties of onion called Bangalore Rose and Krishnapuram in small quantities. But you have to take it by river. The government of the country reported on the export of onion with 9 such conditions.

Khorshed Ali, owner of Messrs. Kalam International, an onion trader in the land port of Bhomra, said: “We have not been informed about the need to import by river.” We already know that the government of that country will give the opportunity to import 10,000 tons of Indian onions in 22 trucks. Either way, merchants can take it. Due to the short distance from the land port of Bhomra to Kolkata, India, traders chose this port to import onions and perishable goods. However, I will not import onions if the condition is to carry them by river.

Amir Hamza, secretary for port affairs at Bhomra C&F Agents Association, said the Indian government had kindly approved the export last year as a show of friendship after the onion closure. But the condition was to take it by sea or by river. That could happen again. However, we were not informed about it. However, if there are conditions for import by river, importers from land ports will not be able to import, except for importers from the ports of Mongla and Chittagong.

Mostafizur Rahman Nasim, general secretary of the Bhomra C&F Agents Association, said: “We have not been informed about the importation of Indian onions by river.”

Haroon Ur Rashid, Chairman of the Healy Land Port Importers and Exporters Group, told the Bengali Tribune: “If we have to take onions through seaports, why take them out of India?” Onion prices are lower in other countries. We have already opened LC to import onions from other countries in the world such as Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey, the process is ongoing. Onions have already started arriving from those countries by ship, which has also entered the country’s market. He also said that LC have been provided to import sufficient quantity of onions and those onions will be released in the country as soon as possible, which will reduce the price of onions in the country market.

Onion importers at the Sonamasjid land port in Chapainawabganj are not interested in importing onions on the condition that the Indian government has recently allowed the export of 20,000 tonnes of onions. They say that just as there is a risk of importing onions in such conditions, it is not possible for them to import onions by sea or by river, since the quality of onions allowed by the Indian government is not good.

Importer Munirul Islam Manik said: “The Indian government has stopped exporting onions due to the recent rains and floods which have damaged the onions and increased prices in the domestic market. As a result, the price of onion increased in Bangladesh. However, the Indian government has not yet given the old LC onion. As a result, the price of onion is currently rising in the country’s market. And now the government of India has allowed the export of that spoiled onion. As a result, the quality of this onion is not good and as there is a risk when importing this onion, we importers are not interested in importing onion on the terms of the Government of India.

He also said, “that has allowed the export of onions from two states (Bangalore and Karnataka); Since our importers do not know much about the exporters there, importing that onion by river will be more complicated. However, if there were the opportunity to export onions from the open market (from any state), those onions could be imported by river; in that case, we would have been able to import quality onions.

Another importer, Babul Hasanat Durul, said: “It takes more time by river than by road and the price of onions imported from countries other than India such as Egypt, Turkey and Pakistan is lower. It is not possible to import onions by river in such countries. terms”. We, the onion importers in the land port of Sonamasjid, are not interested in importing onions in this way.

Meanwhile, Afsar Uddin, owner of Sonali Trading, an onion importer from Khatunganj in Chittagong, told the Bengali Tribune: India has now decided to export Krishnapuram and rose onion varieties. However, the demand for these onion varieties is lower in Bangladesh. So importers generally don’t want to bring those onions. I would have brought it through the land port, but now importers are less interested through the river port.

The same was said by the onion importer, owner of Khatunganj Ira Traders. Farooq. He told the Bengali Tribune: ‘In the last few days some Indian onions have passed through the Chittagong port. The onions that pass through the port are carried in disposable containers and the onions fade a bit. Some onions also rot. Therefore, traders are not very interested in importing onions from India through ports. If it was done through a land port, traders would bring Indian onions at any price. Because there is demand for Indian onion in the country. But if it is through the seaport, the merchants will make a very thoughtful decision.

He added that the onions also come from neighboring Myanmar and far away China. The quality of the Myanmar onions is also good. Therefore, traders will take these issues into account when importing onions from India by sea.
