A student at the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University of Science and Technology of Bangabandhu (BASHEMURBIPRABI) in Gopalganj has been accused of threatening to gang rape her for posting on social media Facebook about rape and impunity. The threat was made on Facebook Messenger around 1 pm last Sunday. The student’s mother and two sisters have been threatened with the same fate.

The victim’s home is in the municipality of Magura. He said he had posted on Facebook about incidents of rape and impunity in the country. His mother and two sisters have been threatened with rape.

He said the bully, Hassan Al Mamun, claimed to be an activist for the Magura Chhatra League. Mamun claims they have thousands of workers and they need a second to hurt (the student). The bully Mamun claimed to be a ‘Mukta Bhai’ activist and mentioned the name of Jahangir Alam, a BCL activist from Bashemurbiprabir in the threatening message.

The victim further said that a general diary was kept at the Magura Sadar police station on Tuesday. Furthermore, Magura informed the deputy commissioner about the matter. However, he did not submit a written complaint and promised to take action if problems arise later.

When contacted, Ali Hossain Mukta, general secretary of the Magura District Chhatra League, said that someone had used his name to question him because he was involved in politics. However, after he learned of the matter, he submitted a GD to the police regarding the Facebook ID of the threatening person. He said he would take stricter legal action in the future if necessary.

When asked, Jahangir Alam, a BCL activist from Bashemur Biprabir, said: ‘Such threats can be made using the BCL name to question BCL. However, since our name is involved, we want this person to be found and verified. All persons involved in these incidents must be brought to justice.

Proctor Bashemurabiprabira said. Raziur Rahman said: ‘The aggrieved student informed me about the matter. If you file a written complaint, the guardianship body, the justice cell and the sexual harassment prevention cell of the university will work together and take all necessary steps with the utmost importance.

Magura Police Superintendent Khan Muhammad Rezwan said legal action will be taken with the utmost importance in the matter.
