Raihan ‘killed’ in custody

Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, Deputy Chief Inspector (SI) of the Bandar Bazar Police Post under the Kotwali Police Station of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP), has been suddenly released from police custody. The police are not looking for him.
To prevent SI Akbar from fleeing to India, a warning was issued in all border areas of the Sylhet District, Sylhet District Police Superintendent Farid Uddin told the media.
Raihan Uddin Ahmed, 33, the son of the late Rafiqul Islam of Neharipara in the Akhalia area of Sylhet city, was tortured to death at the Bandarbazar outpost on Saturday night, police said. The family found his body Sunday morning. Later that night, the victim’s wife filed a murder case accusing unknown persons. Meanwhile, the Police Investigation Directorate has been assigned to investigate the case.
Relatives allege that Raihan was beaten to death while in police custody for not receiving 10,000 rupees. The police claimed that Raihan was beaten to death during a robbery in a wooded area of the city’s 14th district. However, the local councilor said no such thing was seen in CCTV camera footage from the area where the mass beating was reported.
After the incident, SI Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, police officers Harunur Rashid, Touhid Mia and Titu Chandra Das were suspended on Monday. Additionally, Deputy Assistant Inspector (ASI) Ashek Elahi, ASI Qutb Ali and Agent Sajib Hossain were also removed.

Today is tuesday morning Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) spokesman and additional deputy commissioner Jyotirmoy Sarkar told the media: “SI Akbar was under police surveillance until 11:40 pm on Monday. At that time he was in the Zindabazar area of the city. Since then, his mobile phone has been switched off and his Facebook account has been deactivated, his whereabouts unknown.
According to the rules, those who are fired or removed must go to the police line every day and report to the appropriate inspector. His assistance was brought there. But today SI Akbar did not attend.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Jyotirmoy Sarkar added: “He is believed to have been in hiding. That has been reported to higher authorities. After that, a warning was issued at the border.
Raihan’s death at the police station: Investigation Committee
Raihan Uddin Ahmed, 33, died at the Bandar Bazar police post under the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Kotwali police station after being detained for three hours and 10 minutes and 40 seconds. Chief Information Commissioner (DC) Azbahar Ali Sheikh said that such information came to light on the first day of the inquiry committee formed by the SMP.

Raihan was arrested by members of the Bandarbazar police post in the Kastghar area of the city at 2.37 pm on Saturday, said SMP Deputy Commissioner Azbahar Ali Sheikh. He said CCTV footage from the area was also found. There was no sign of a massive beating of Raihan. CCTV footage, the police and eyewitnesses and observation of the surrounding situation initially showed that Raihan was injured at the Bandarbazar police post. Later he was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
To investigate the death of Raihan Uddin Ahmed (33) Responsibility has been entrusted to the Police Investigations Office (PBI). This afternoon, SMP spokesman Jyotirmoy Sarkar said: “This morning, the Raihan Ahmed murder case has been transferred from the police headquarters to PBI.”
Raihan’s wife, Tahmina Akhter Tanni, filed a murder case against him at around 2.30pm on Sunday. No defendant’s name has been mentioned in the case.
