The expelled leader of the Juba Mahila League from the Narsingdi district, Shamima Nur Papia, and her husband, Mofizur Rahman Sumon, have been sentenced to 27 years in prison in two sections of the weapons case. Both were sentenced to 20 years in prison in a weapons case and seven years in a shooting case.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions judge, KM Imrul Kayesh, rendered the verdict on Monday. Shamima Nur Papia’s lawyer, Shakhawat Ullah Bhuiyan, called the verdict a resolved case.

After the verdict, the lawyer told the media: “The statement of the case, the charge sheet and the list of seizures say that the weapon was recovered from the room. But the man who confiscated it testified in court that the gun had been recovered from the kitchen.

The lawyer added: “Here, the prosecution has brought the witness back to testify in court, violating the law.” Because once the evidence is established in law, there is no possibility to withdraw it later. He further said: “We have been able to take the witnesses through the interrogation during the trial, there is no similarity between one witness and another. For this reason, we are not satisfied with this verdict. I will go to high court against this verdict.

Another lawyer, AFM Golam Fattah, said: ‘We have no weapons. It’s a neat suit. False accusations have been made in the case. The case was brought for political revenge.

Who is this papaya

Papia, daughter of retired Petrobangla driver Saiful Bari, a resident of the Bhagdi Markaz mosque area in the city of Narsingdi district. He was admitted to Narsingdi Government College in 2009 in class XI. Then in 2012, he was admitted to graduation. However, he was unable to graduate.

Papia’s involvement in student politics can be heard from student leaders of the time. According to some, Papia was never actively involved in student politics. According to some, Papia has become used to a chaotic life since her college days.

Before landing a position in the Young Women’s League, Papia married Mofizur Rahman aka Sumon Chowdhury aka Moti Sumon, former convenor of the Narsingdi City Chhatra League.

Arrested for that reason

Upon leaving the country on February 22, the RAB arrested Papia’s husband, Mofizur Rahman Sumon, along with his accomplice from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Seven passports, Taka 2,12,260, counterfeit Tak 25,600, GBP 11,461, some Sri Lankan and Indian banknotes and two debit cards were seized.

According to his information, Papia and his personal assistant, Sheikh Tayyiba, were arrested at the Westin Hotel. Shortly after Papia’s arrest, information about various immoral activities against him reached the media. Police said in a press conference several times that about two months before the arrest, Shamima Nur Papia sent a model to the room of an influential businessman at an elite hotel in the capital. After that, her friends including Papia made a video of the intimate scene of the model and the businessman. Papia took Tk 20 lakh from the businessman through blackmail.

At the beginning of February this year, the businessman filed a complaint with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Following the indictment, RAB intelligence agents took detailed information from the businessman. Later, detectives stepped up surveillance on Papia and her colleagues.

After that, RAB started looking at Westin Hotel in Gulshan. After keeping Papia under surveillance, RAB detectives learned that Papia was not just that businessman, but had blackmailed many elite people and embezzled thousands of rupees. Papia used foreign models to blackmail the powerful and wealthy to extort large sums of money. He used to bring models from different countries. Large sums of money were transacted with the models. The models were brought to Bangladesh, left for a while, and shipped back. Models had to pay large sums of money, including the cost of airline tickets.

According to a source from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Immigration Police, Papia brought some Russian models through Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport a month ago. Later, those models were excluded from immigration. Because they couldn’t say the specific reason for coming to Bangladesh. So Shamima Nur Papia was able to bring out those models with different powerful people.

When asked about this, Sarwar bin Kashem, the head of the RAB intelligence department, told NTV Online on February 29: “We have also heard that Papia brings models from abroad.” However, we do not know the details of this. We have appealed to the Ministry of the Interior to investigate this case. We will try to find out the details if we have a responsibility to investigate.

Shamima Noor Papia had been committing various immoral activities, including illegal women, arms and drug trafficking, and extortion by reserving the President Suite of the Westin Hotel in Gulshan in her own name for several months. Rambo says that in the last three months, Papia has paid a bill of Tk 1.30 crore at that hotel alone. I used to pay around two and a half lakh rupees every day at the hotel bar.
