A press release signed by him also mentioned the expulsion order but did not mention the reason for the incident. However, he said that these 12 members were temporarily expelled from all levels, including the main membership, under Article 5 (c) of the Constitution for alleged infringement of party discipline. Kafil Uddin supporters staged a protest in front of Mirza Fakhrul’s house on Saturday against the non-nomination of the desired candidate in the Dhaka-17 by-elections. The protesters attacked his home at the time. BNP Acting President Tarique Rahman and members of the standing committee immediately expressed their anger at the incident. The team made that decision two days later.

BNP chose SM Jahangir from among 9 candidates in the Dhaka-17 constituency by-elections. A senior party leader, who did not want to be named, said the incident was caused by Kafiluddin Ahmed, deputy secretary general of the North BNP, who was seeking the nomination for Jahangir.
