US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also hosted an event on October 22 on sustainable assistance to the Rohingya. The United Kingdom, the European Union and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) also participate in the event. Although Bangladesh has been invited to participate in the event, what will be discussed has yet to be announced, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said. However, the government does not agree with the information that Bangladesh has received from various sources about the meeting and the content that will be discussed.
“We have heard what they have said, they are going to talk about 10 years of humanitarian aid,” he said. But we have been getting help for a year. We have no interest in the long term. We want to say goodbye to the Rohingya as soon as possible.
The main objective of Bangladesh is repatriation. “We are not interested in who will pay how much in 10 years,” he said. One says, multi-year planning. But we are not talking about multi-year planning. Rohingya multi-year rehabilitation plan. But that does not interest us.
He added: “They say that the countries of the region will give refuge to the Rohingya. But we believe that it is not just a regional problem, it is a global problem and everyone should come forward. But they say it is better to be in the region.
The rescue and disembarkation of the Rohingya who have drowned at sea will be in this area. In other words, they have no responsibility, said the minister, ‘We don’t believe in this either. Earlier we said to the Europeans: why don’t they take them with their boats? That is why it seems to be trying to provoke us.
The Foreign Minister said that Bangladesh should be the number one player in that meeting. “We are suffering for the Rohingya,” he said. They said it with an empty mouth. But we have to give details about what to talk about and we will understand and participate.
When asked if Myanmar would be present at the meeting, the Foreign Minister said: “Maybe they haven’t told us anything.”
Regarding the security of the Rohingya camp, he said: ‘We are thinking of giving up fences. If not, how the fight started. Other businesses have started, including medicines. We have to take control of the camp. ‘
China’s role in the repatriation of the Rohingya
“China has proposed a tripartite meeting at our ministerial level,” Momen said of Chinese Ambassador Li Jiming’s meeting with the foreign minister on Sunday (October 12).
“We had ministerial meetings in three countries (Bangladesh, China and Myanmar),” he said. They are now thinking of holding another similar meeting in Beijing for an update.
“The Chinese ambassador will talk to his country about this,” he said. He asked me if I was willing to go. I said, of course, that you have to convince Myanmar. I said this meeting wouldn’t be possible without Aung San Suu Kyi. ‘
“They will set the date and we welcome the initiative,” he said.
The Chancellor said that various institutions are talking about improving the Rohingya’s standard of living by excluding repatriation and how they can be included in our society.
He said: ‘Many are saying that they (the Rohingya) can stay in Bangladesh. We don’t want that. We want them to return to Rakhine and improve their quality of life. China agrees with us on this. The first problem is repatriation. Myanmar is not accepting them and China will talk to them about this.
