He was one of the stars of Indian football in the nineties. He played for East Bengal, a popular club in Kolkata. At the Asian Cup Winners’ Cup, he made a memorable debut against Iraqi club Al Java. Chapman scored a hat-trick in a 6-2 win over East Bengal. He has played several times in Bangladesh. That Carlton Chapman did not leave the country today. At age 49 he died of a heart attack.
Chapman was a member of the Indian soccer team that won a silver medal at the 1993 SAF Games in Dhaka. He came to Bangladesh in 1996 as captain of the Indian national team to participate in the SAF Championship. As captain of the service he won the country the championship title. Chapman dominated Indian football in the 1990s as a midfielder. The footballers of that era in Bangladesh will never forget it.
At the end of his career, he chose coaching as a profession. That chapman was recently hospitalized with severe back pain. He was diagnosed with a heart attack and it was too late to go to hospital. Even then, the doctors continued their efforts to save the star. After all attempts failed, Chapman did not return home. He graduated from the Tata Football Academy, the pride of Indian football. He is considered one of the best talents in this academy.
