His family has reported that a young man named Raihan Uddin (34) was tortured to death at the Bandarbazar police post in Sylhet.
Hours earlier, senior police officials claimed that Raihan had been beaten to death during the kidnapping, but promised to investigate the allegations after the torture allegations surfaced.
However, where the police speak of mass beatings, the CCTV footage from the city corporation does not match the truth of any such incident in the area.
Tahmina Akhter Tani, wife of the deceased, is filing a case with the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Kotwali police station on Sunday evening.
The case was brought by Kotwali OC Police Station (Investigation) Soumen Maitra.
Unidentified persons have been charged in the case. Raihan’s cousin, Abdur Rahman, confirmed the matter to Jugantar at 3.30pm.
Meanwhile, the city’s woodworking area belongs to the 14th district of Sylhet City Corporation. The entire area is covered by CCTV cameras. These cameras are controlled in the office of the councilor Nazrul Islam Munim of the 14th district.
CCTV footage of the woodcut area was collected from 12pm Saturday to 8am Sunday by visiting Munim’s office on Sunday night. No massive hits were seen on these recordings. Even at this time no police patrol was seen in the wooded area.
Councilor Munim said he had seen CCTV footage. From Saturday night to Sunday morning, nothing suspicious was seen in the images of the area. I also spoke with some local residents. They have never heard of anything like this.
The reporter also spoke with several merchants and residents of the woodshed area. None of them had news of massive beatings at night or in the early hours of the morning. They didn’t hear any screams.
However, in the morning, police patrolled the area around the puja mandapa wooden house, locals said.
The house of lawyer Sumit Shyam Paul is next to the puja mandapa wooden house. He told reporters that the screams of drug addicts could be heard in the area almost at night. You can also hear the sound of police whistles. But I didn’t hear any of that on Saturday night or Sunday morning. If there was a mass beating incident, screams could be heard.
He said police arrived in the area around 10 a.m. Sunday. At that time, they said, a young man was killed in a massive beating in this area in the morning.
On the other hand, locals protested on the Sylhet-Sunamganj highway in the Akhalia area of the city on Sunday afternoon in protest of Raihan’s murder.
Tires were set on fire in front of Mount Edora Hospital. The locals also alleged that Raihan was killed in police custody.
