Women’s clothing responsible for rape: Ananta Jalil

Amid protests across the country against the growing incidence of rape and violence against women and girls, actor Ananta Jalil has blamed women’s open clothing for inviting “unwanted sexual harassment.” In an 8 minute 16 second video posted to his wife Barsha’s verified Facebook page, the actor is heard giving some advice to women like his ‘brother’.

She said: ‘Women (in Bangladesh) wear indecent clothing inspired by women from other countries, movies, television and social media. People look at your body instead of your face because of this type of clothing. They make obscene comments (about women) and think about rape. ‘

‘Do you (women) consider yourself modern? Is the dress you are wearing trendy or raunchy? A modern dress simply means showing your face and covering your body with decent clothes that make you look beautiful, ‘said Ananta.

He added: “Any garment that does not cover the entire body except the face makes women look” extremely bad. “

The Dhaka film actor said: “They will take to the streets in T-shirts like children and when they return home disgraced or raped, they may commit suicide or they will not be able to show their face in public.”

According to the Center for Arbitration and Human Rights Law, between January and September of this year there were about 1,000 violations, including 206 in group.

Of the victims, 43 have died and 12 have committed suicide since the rape.

“People will look at you with respect if you wear decent clothes,” Ananta said, noting that ‘decent’ clothes will stifle thoughts of rape.

According to data collected from the media based on information from the Center for Law and Arbitration, 6 of the rape victims are under 6 years of age. Another 139 victims were between the ages of 8 and 12. However, this information is believed to cover very few cases because most women and girls who survive rape have not disclosed it for fear of social stigma and for their own protection.

“What would you do if the same thing happened to your wife and sister?”

He also called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take effective steps to introduce the death penalty as a punishment for rape.

The recent gang rape of a wife while her husband was detained at Sylhet MC College and the rape of a housewife in Begumganj, Noakhali, have sparked protests across the country. Protesters have called for stricter laws against rape and violence against women. ONE B
