The two planes collided in the southeastern city of Tur, in the Midwest, around 4:30 p.m. local time on Saturday.
Members of the emergency department, including 50 firefighters, were immediately dispatched to the scene. They have cordoned off the area where the remains of the two planes fell.
No one was injured when the two planes crashed.
The smaller of the two planes involved in the collision is an ultralight. There were only two riders. After the collision, the plane crashed into the perimeter of a house in the town of Loshen, 48 kilometers southeast of Tur.
A witness said the plane caught fire after falling on the home’s electric meter.
The relatively large plane landed in a deserted area more than 100 meters away. The Diamond DA40 had three occupants.
“All five passengers on the two planes were killed. Emergency crews were brought in from Liu to find the two planes; the two planes were quickly found,” said Nazia Segei, a local government official.
It was not immediately clear who was killed or how the two planes collided in midair. Local police have launched an investigation into the incident.
In France, collisions between two small planes in the air are very rare. In 1997, 15 people were killed when a small plane collided with a Beechcraft 1900D in Kibbon Bay off the coast of Britain.
“This is an incredible and unexpected event,” said Mark Angenol, Mayor of Lausanne.
