Waterlogging in the capital Dhaka has long been a problem due to light rains. Dhaka WASA is responsible for water drainage. But the negligence and various accusations against this state institution are also long-standing. Faced with this situation, the two mayors of Dhaka North and South demanded that they be given responsibility for drainage. Eventually they will assume that responsibility.

Haider Ali, a public relations official for the local government ministry, said on Saturday that the two city corporations were responsible for draining rainwater in the capital. The local government ministry is taking this initiative in response to the demands of the two mayors. A meeting will be held in the ministry meeting room on Sunday afternoon.

Dhaka WASA was given the responsibility in 1989 to remove the waterlogging. In addition, several other organizations, including Dhaka City Corporation, are also involved in this work. The City Corporation alleges that Dhaka WASA is busy with projects worth millions of rupees, although other organizations are in charge. As a result, responsibility for the failure of WASA rests with the City Corporation. And the people of Pohan are being flooded.

In 2016, the Mayor of South Dhaka, Saeed Khokon, and the late Mayor of the North, Anisul Haque, filed complaints against WASA. Saeed Khokon said, Dhaka WASA is responsible for the waterlogging. He also reported WASA as a failed company.

Following the statements of the then two mayors, on July 16 of that year an interdepartmental coordination meeting was held. At the meeting, the then local government minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain called WASA a failure in solving the water blockade and decided to take responsibility for the city corporation. But legal complications are created. Therefore, a committee was formed at that meeting to amend the law. But the correction has not yet been made.

The two current mayors of Dhaka also blamed WASA for the waterlogging. However, WASA says the main responsibility for solving the flooding rests with the city corporation. At that interdepartmental coordination meeting in 2016, Dhaka WASA chief engineer Taksim A Khan said that those who supply pure water in any country in the world, dirty water is not their responsibility.

In this situation, the local government minister, Tajul Islam, said: “We have called a meeting on Sunday to hand over the responsibility for drainage of rainwater from Dhaka WASA to the city corporation.
