Matbars has been accused of covering up two violations in a rural arbitration. They fined a man accused of raping a madrasa student with 90,000 taka and another accused of raping a housewife with 70,000 taka. There have been two recent incidents in the villages of Barashibpur and Jhajar of Sherpur upazila de Bogra.

According to the victim’s family and local sources, a seventh-grade student from a local madrasa slept in her room at night on October 4. At midnight, Chabbir Hasan, son of Abdus Salam from Ramnagar village, entered the house and raped the girl. At the cry of the girl, people came and arrested Chabbir. Later, Shabbir was arrested at the home of Dabidur Rahman, president of the Garidaha Union in the same town. The next day, the Matbars refereed there. The incident was resolved by a fine.

Village Matbar Abdul Momin was present at the arbitration meeting. He said other rural killers, including the president, had tried. According to him, the accused was charged a fine of 60,000 taka and handed it over to the father of the victim. But Abdul Momin claims that he is not one of them. He said that the townspeople have done all this. The remaining Rs 30,000 has been spent in various sectors.

However, Dabidur Rahman, president of Garidaha Union Parishad, denied the allegations, saying: “I heard about the incident in my village. Also, I have not conducted any arbitration. I was not even present there. So I don’t know much about it.”

On the other hand, on the night of October 1, Helaluddin, the son of Azimuddin, a neighbor, entered the house of a laborer in the village of Jhajar and raped his wife. The next day, at the arbitration, the village killers Solaiman Ali, Selim Reza, Faruk Hossain, Aziz and Tunu kicked the accused. But the husband of the raped housewife refused to accept this judgment. Later, the village matabars met again and charged a fine of 60,000 taka to cover up the incident.

Sherpur Police Inspector (Investigation) Abul Kalam Azad said: ‘I have heard about the incident in Barashibpur village. They (the victim’s family) are supposed to go to the police station to file a complaint. If a complaint is received, action will be taken in accordance with the law. Stating that he did not know about the incident in another Jhajar village, he said it would be possible to tell later after asking.
