Apparently a 22-year-old housewife was gang-raped on her way home from Chittagong. Police arrested eight people, including a police source and a woman, in the incident.
The incident took place in the Moulvipukurpar area of the Chandgaon police station on Thursday night, police said.
Those arrested are- Police source Jahangir Alam (38), Md. Yusuf (32), Md. Ripon (26), Maryland. Sujan (24), Debu Barua Prakash, Jobayer Hossain, Md. Shahed (24), Rintu Dutta Biplob (30) and Monowara Begum aka mother of Lebu (55). Apart from Ripon, Sujan, Shahed and Monowara, the rest are CNG conductors.
Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (North) Vijay Basak said at a press conference Friday that the housewife got on a GNC autorickshaw from Rangunia in the district around 10:30 pm in the area of Chandgaon town. From there he took a rickshaw to his home in the city’s Chawkbazar. On the way, Maulvi got her off a rickshaw in the Pukurpar area and took her behind a garbage can on the side of the road and raped her.
The housewife entered the hospital at night. He is currently in treatment at the One Stop Crisis Center (OCC) at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, ”said Vijay Basak.
He added: “We launched the operation after receiving information from the OCC. Defendant Jahangir was arrested in Patia. In addition, the rest were detained from other parts of the city.
Police officer Vijay Basak said: ‘The defendant beat the woman and took her mobile phone and two thousand rupees from her. We got the news from OCC around 4:30 pm. I showed the victim photographs of the accused. He has identified them. We recovered signs of violation of the place.
He also said that an operation is underway to arrest some more people involved in the incident.
