Reflections have begun on whether schools and universities, like other government institutions, can offer weekly holidays on Fridays and Saturdays.
The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) has requested the views of ministers and secretaries in this regard.
Akram-al-Hussein, chief secretary of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, told reporters on Thursday that “no decision has been made yet, talks have started.”
The NCTB has outlined the implementation of the new curriculum since 2022, highlighting the benefits of having a two-day weekly leave.
NCTB President Professor Narayan Chandra Saha told reporters Thursday night: “We have created a framework with a new curriculum. I did it as one of the kind there.
“If the school is open 165 days a year, how many hours are available for classes. And how many hours can you find if you keep it closed two days a week. We have outlined such a calculation. “
No proposal has been made to keep schools and universities closed for two days a week, Professor Narayan said.
“The scheme will be taken up in the NCC (National Committee for the Curricular Coordination of Textbooks) with the opinions of the ministers and secretaries. Everyone’s opinion will be sought by posting on our website. Before that, we wanted ministers and secretaries to watch. “
NCTB President said: “In the summary, we just calculated how many class hours are available if one day is closed and how many class hours are available if two days are closed.
“Teachers will be able to come to class with more preparation if it is closed for two days. Teachers will also have the opportunity to evaluate some problems outside of the classroom. These problems have been described. “
After independence, the weekly holiday in the country was one day and it was Sunday. During Ershad’s tenure, weekly holidays were made first on Fridays and Saturdays instead of Sundays. Later it was only done on Fridays.
During the previous Awami League government (1996-2001), the weekly leave was again extended to two days.
The then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not agree to take the initiative to reduce the weekly leave to one day in 2013.
As a result, government offices are now open from 9 am to 5 pm, outside of the weekend from Friday to Saturday.
