At least 30 Armenians have been killed in an ongoing battle in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, the Defense Ministry said on Thursday. Since the start of the war with Azerbaijan on September 26, 350 Armenian soldiers have died.
The fighting is at its worst since the 1990s, when nearly 30,000 people were killed on both sides in organized warfare. The clashes have raged for 12 days in the disputed area. Although both countries suffered casualties in the conflict, Azerbaijan is in a very advantageous position.
Azerbaijani and ethnic Armenian forces clashed again in and around the Nagorno-Karabakh region on Thursday before the United States, France and Russia met in Geneva to prevent a far-reaching war in the South Caucasus.
Azerbaijan says Armenian forces shelled the city of Ganja early Thursday morning, killing a civilian. The ethnic Armenian forces also opened fire on other villages.
The Azeri authorities have so far reported 30 civilians killed in the fighting that began on September 26. Another 143 civilians were injured. However, Azerbaijan has not released any information on military casualties.
