Police sent an Awami League leader named Golzar Hossain (35) to jail on charges of raping the wife of an expatriate in Chatmohar upazila of Pabna.
He was detained Wednesday night in a case brought by the victim.
Golzar is the son of Motaleb Hossain from Nazirpur village in the Baraigram upazila zonal union of Natore and deputy general secretary of the Awami League zonal union.
Deputy Investigation Officer (SI) Pradeep Kumar Sheel told Jugantar that a man from Rampur village in the Haripur junction of Chatmohar upazila had emigrated to Iraq two years ago.
From exile, he regularly sent money to his wife. Meanwhile, Golzar Hossain from the neighboring town of Nazirpur formed a relationship with the expat’s wife. Subsequently, Golzar Hossain had sex with the expatriate’s wife more than once, showing fear and various guarantees.
Furthermore, the leader of the Awami League, Golzar, snatched 5 lakh 20 lakhs from the expat’s wife at different times. When the expat returned home from Iraq recently, he asked his wife for a bill and told her that he had taken 5 lakh 20 lakhs.
After that, the expat started making excuses when he asked Golzar for money. Later, when he asked for money again, the expat was beaten and wounded by Goljargang on 2 October. The expatriate also filed a complaint at the police station.
Meanwhile, when a local arbitration meeting was held on Wednesday afternoon to resolve the issue, the housewife revealed the issue of rape and torture in the arbitration. Later, when the arbitration failed, the housewife filed a rape case against the leader of the Awami League, Golzar Hossain, at the police station.
Chatmohar police arrested the defendant Golzar Hossain in a night raid.
Nazrul Islam, general secretary of the Awami League zonal union, confirmed the name of the arrested Golzar Hossain and told Jugantar that a person who has tarnished the image of the government and the party has no place in the Awami League. Arrangements are already being made to eject him.
The Chatmohar OC Aminul Islam Police Station confirmed the case and the arrest and told Jugantar that the defendant was turned over to the Pabna court on Thursday morning.
