How students will be able to pursue careers in the future is largely determined at the high school level (HSC). But in an unprecedented epidemic situation, this is the first time since Bangladesh became independent that it has decided to take alternate assessments without taking upper secondary exams and equivalents. Despite the frustration among teachers, students and educators over the lack of exams, many have welcomed the decision to avoid the risk of corona. However, there are many concerns about proper evaluation. Some say that it would have been more acceptable to evaluate the eleventh and twelfth classes together with SSC.

Since JSC and SSC will be evaluated based on the results of the two exams, there is no chance that anyone will fail this time. All will pass. Chairman of the Dhaka Board of Education. Ziaul Haque said: ‘Of course everyone will pass. But what the result will be depends on the results of your JSC and SSC exams.

In response to the question why the test is not assessed before the HSC exam, Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni said: “The better the test preparation, the better the test preparation. At this time, there may be various problems in taking the test results. We have the results of two tests, that’s why we are going to give these results based on those two results.

Deputy Minister of Education Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Nawfel told the press conference: “We are making a decision based on international best practices. It has been taken into account so that our students do not face any problems at the international level.

English Medium School conducts ‘O’ and ‘A’ level exams in two sessions in May-June and October-November each year. The alternate assessment was postponed by postponing the May-June exams for English Middle Schools in Corona. Basically, they have assessed the students considering various aspects, including class tests and attendance at their respective classes. The previous tests were only a small part of the evaluation.

“When it was decided to abolish HSC and equivalent exams in the country and evaluate them on the basis of the results of JSC and SSC, the ‘O’ and ‘A’ level exams are being carried out all over the world. Education has given permission to take this test in Bangladesh. In our neighboring country India, eight lakh candidates took the engineering exam last month. 1.3 million students in the country are also preparing for medical exams. “

Former Education Secretary Nazrul Islam Khan told Kaler Kantha of the government’s decision: “The decision was good because there were no delays with the HSC candidates. When this decision was made, why was it not made sooner? However, It has been good for many students who did not do well on this exam. But those who were prepared to do better suffered. In fact, if we could do an evaluation throughout the year, it would be the best. And the evaluation should be done from that But the big question is, what did a student learn? ‘

Professor Nazrul Islam, former chairman of the University Scholarship Commission, told Kaler Kanth: “The government may have made a very thoughtful decision. Hopefully, they have discussed the matter in detail with the academics. The present time is like the time of war. Although the assessment is different at this time, they must sit for the college entrance exam. That’s where they have to cross the real barrier. ‘

Those who were supposed to take HSC and equivalent exams this year passed SSC in 2016 and JSC in 2017. In 2016, 15 lakh 8,104 people passed in 10 meetings, including eight general meetings. The average approval rate is 7.6 percent. One lakh 10,629 students get a total GPA of 5. And in 2016, 21 lakh 83 thousand 975 people passed JSC-JDC. The average approval rate is 93.06 percent. Two lakh 46 thousand 57 candidates get a total GPA 5.

However, the average pass rate on HSC and equivalent exams in 2019 was 63.93 percent. 48 thousand 26 people obtained GPA 5. The total number of examinees was 13 lakh 37 thousand 729 people. Of these, 9 lakh 8,162 passed. Three lakh 46,458 students failed, who will earn a high school certificate without taking any exams this time.

Last year, there were a lakh 70,929 students who failed one subject, 54 thousand 224 students who failed two subjects, and 51 thousand 348 people who failed all subjects. Apart from the regular and irregular candidates, there were 3,390 private candidates. There are 16,728 candidates for the quality improvement exam. This time there is no fault as the decision was made on the basis of the JSC and SSC exams, everyone is passing.

Concerned people say last year’s GPA 5 at HSC was just 46,000. But if HSC is evaluated based on the results of JSC and SSC, the number of GPA 5 obtained will also double. This will create complications in college admission. Because the number of places in public universities is limited. In total, it is close to 50 thousand. However, if the 2018 JSC and 2018 SSC results are averaged, GPA 5 will be more than one lakh.

Head of Kislay Girls’ School and College. Rahmat Ullah told Kaler Kantha: ‘All institutions go 100%. This is not a good sign. Even a student has to carry this wound forever. It would be nice to think more about whether important topics could be evaluated in a short time. Students who did poorly at JSC or SSC, this time prepared well, will be hurt.

Rahmat Ullah said that many people don’t think the JSC exam is important. For this, more importance should be given to CSS in the evaluation. As a result of such an assessment, students will also face college admissions problems. Many good students will not be able to take the entrance exam because they have done poorly on SSC. Universities must also think of alternatives in this regard.
