The Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) has changed the inscription “Pak / Pakistan” on the existing pillar at the Bangladesh-India border to “BD / Bangladesh”. BGB’s chief operating officer, Lt. Col. Faizur Rahman, said this at a press conference held at the BGB headquarters in Peelkhana on Wednesday.
He said there were a total of 10,240 pillars on the border, which is much earlier. These were written “Pak” or “Pakistan”. BGB members who were on duty at the border asked us to consider turning these pillars into ‘BD’ or ‘Bangladesh’. Subsequently, the CEO of BGB decided to change these according to the process. As part of the program, BGB members have changed the ‘Pak / Pakistan’ on these border pillars with cement and sand and have labeled them ‘BD / Bangladesh’.
Responding to a question from reporters about drug trafficking, he said that the BGB was fulfilling its responsibilities in general border affairs, including drug trafficking. BGB members on the Myanmar border are on high alert to prevent all kinds of drugs, including yaba. It can be said that the involvement of BGB with drugs on the border is nil.
Faizur Rahman said that the BGB has established an ‘Intelligent Digital Surveillance and Tactical Border Response System’ to strengthen border management and border security. Work is underway on a barbed wire fence at Teknaf. Floating BOPs have been installed and silver high-speed interceptor vessels have been added. The BGB currently has two helicopter additions.
He said plans have been made to build 615 km of border roads in the mountainous border areas. Construction of a 316 km border highway is underway there. In addition, approval has been received for the construction of 63 modern composite BOPs.
On the killings at the border, he said that a meeting was held recently at the level of the BGB-BSF CEO. He has received comments from the Director General of BSF (Rakesh Asthana) on the issue of deaths at the border by BSF shootings, since then there have been no murders at the border.
In response to another question, the BGB’s director of operations said: “Central officials need to know better how much BGB members should be present at the border.” We have as many BGB members as we need to protect our borders. Our people on the border are alert. Action will be taken according to the instructions of the responsible persons. The BGB workforce has grown now and we are doing our best to meet our responsibilities.
Faizur Rahman said that the BGB carried out raids in the country’s border areas and elsewhere from February to September this year and seized various types of smuggled goods and drugs totaling Taka 382.959 million.
The BGB also arrested 2,063 smugglers accused of being involved in various types of drug trafficking and smuggling, including yaba, and 344 Bangladeshis and 98 Indians accused of illegally crossing the border. Boss
