Mia Seppo, the UN resident coordinator in Dhaka, made the call in a statement on her Twitter account on Wednesday amid protests across the country over the rape of two women in Sylhet and Noakhali.
The statement read: “In light of the recent incidents of rape, the United Nations has expressed its deep concern about the increasing violence against women in Bangladesh. These are serious crimes and serious human rights violations ”.
The statement says that the incident of rape, torture of a housewife in Noakhali and the publication of her video has highlighted social misogyny.
“The Noakhali incident has shown once again that it is not an isolated incident.”
Mia Seppo expressed her support for those who have taken to the streets to demand justice and said that “the United Nations supports the people and civil society in demanding justice.”
Activists say the culture of impunity in the country has led to an increase in rape and sexual harassment.
Ministers, on the other hand, say that whenever something happens, the government takes action and brings the perpetrators to justice.
“The United Nations (UN) is in favor of an urgent reform of the criminal justice system to provide support and protection to victims and witnesses and to speed up the trial,” the statement said.
Mia Seppo said she was ready to help the UN government in this regard.
“There is no substitute for ensuring transparency and accountability in responding to the many laws and action plans that are being implemented to protect women and girls,” the statement said.
The United Nations has called for an end to the alarming increase in rape cases around the world.
