BNP leaders have given mixed reactions to statements by three senior vice presidents about the party’s leadership. Led by Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman, the party’s vice president, Shah Moazzem Hossain, Major (retired) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and lawyer Shahjahan Omar recently spoke on a private television channel. A section of the party thinks that questioning the leadership means rebellion against the party. There is a demand to take organizational measures against them. A high-ranking leader of the BNP standing committee, who did not want to be named, told Jugantar that there had been reports of riots on behalf of senior leaders. However, the truth of that was not found. So now there is no action against them. There is more to see or understand. When asked about this, BNP deputy general secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told Jugantar: “I have heard the statements of three leaders. But I don’t know what the team’s decision is.”
According to sources, the television channel broadcast the speeches of the three leaders in three episodes. Shah Moazzem Hossain said: ‘Khaleda Zia is uncompromising. If you do not commit, you will be released from prison. After listening to the government, he came out with a compromise. Khaleda Zia has been Prime Minister three times as the widow of Ziaur Rahman. But why didn’t she judge the murder of Ziaur Rahman?
Major (Retired) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said: ‘The leaders and the workers have made a commitment. We don’t want to go to jail. Not willing to suffer any kind of torture. Khaleda Zia had to accept jail due to the party’s weakness. The BNP president is not seen in a vocal role. But its permanent seat in the public mind has no alternative (replacement). Khaleda Zia is the only current and future leader of the BNP. So who doesn’t know?
Shahjahan Omar said: ‘Tareq Rahman lives in London. And sitting in London is very difficult to talk or exchange ideas. From time to time he talks on Skype, not even with us. How far you can take the team! Yes, politics can be done from outside, as Khomeini did in Iran. He lived in France for 15 years and returned home. There are many more such leaders. But how much Tareq Rahman can do, you see, I see too.
When asked about the statement, Shah Moazzem Hossain told Jugantar: “I have told the truth. Khaleda Zia was Prime Minister three times. So why was the trial for the murder of Ziaur Rahman not held? love BNP and Ziaur Rahman, can’t you ask this question? In response to a question, he said, ‘I don’t have time to rebel. Shahjahan Omar said: ‘Part of my speech has been broadcast. The statement has been skewed a bit. It was not possible to speak because Hafiz Uddin Ahmed’s mobile phone was switched off.
Several central BNP leaders said that Shah Moazzem Hossain, Major (retired) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and lawyer Shahjahan Omar were not very active in the party. But they may have said the words in anger. Anyone in a democratic party can speak up. They can be warned if they make a mistake. Therefore, no organizational measures should be required.
A leader of the BNP standing committee told Jugantar that the party’s acting president did not take the matter well.
