On November 16, 2001, activists from Jamaat-e-Islami entered the home of director Gopal Krishna Muhuri (60) on Jamal Khan Road in Chittagong and shot him in the head with a gun.
His wife Uma Muhuri, the then railway audit officer, filed a murder case at the Kotwali Police Station in Chittagong on the same day.
Nasir alias Gittu Nasir, Azam, Alamgir and Montu were sentenced to death by a judge after the trial of the head of Nazirhat College, Gopal Krishna Muhurioi, in Chittagong.
In addition, Mohiuddin alias Mohinuddin, Habib Khan, Saiful alias Chhota Saiful and Shahjahan were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Following the verdict of the trial court, the death remission of the case reached the High Court, as well as the accused in prison also appealed.
Gittu Nasir, who was sentenced to death, was killed on March 2, 2005 in an alleged shootout with law enforcement. Little Saiful, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, also died.
After the hearing, the High Court confirmed the death penalty of three people and handed down a sentence on July 19, 2008. Shahjahan and Saiful, alias Chhoto Saiful, who were sentenced to life imprisonment, were acquitted in that verdict, while the sentences others remained in force.
Alamgir Kabir then appealed to the Appeals Division seeking acquittal of the three convicts. And Taslim Uddin aka Montu, Mohammad Azam filed a jail appeal.
Following the verdict, Deputy Attorney General Amit Dasgupta told bdnews24.com: “A short request was made today. The appeals division has rejected the defendants’ appeals and jail appeals.
