Armenia and Azerbaijan are embroiled in a bloody conflict over the occupation of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The war between the two countries takes more than a week. After the United Nations, the Red Cross and the European Union, this time Iran has called for peaceful talks between the two countries. Iran has also offered to mediate to bring the two countries to the negotiating table.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have suffered heavy casualties in recent days. On Sunday, Armenia destroyed with artillery a part of the second largest city in Azerbaijan, Ganjar. Another Azerbaijani town, Tartar, was bombed on Monday. On the other hand, the invasion of Azerbaijan has practically dusted the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh. So far, at least 220 fighters have died in Nagorno-Karabakh. They were all fighting alongside the Armenian army against Azerbaijan. In addition, 72 civilians were killed. At least 24 civilians have died in Azerbaijan. Neither Armenia nor Azerbaijan provided military casualty figures.
Iran shares borders with Armenia and Azerbaijan. Several mortar shells also fell on Iranian soil during the war. An Iranian boy was injured.
So Iran has had to go out into the field to stop the war in the interests of its own security. Iran has asked both countries to sit down peacefully. But no country has responded yet.
