Earlier this year, 59 mummy coffins were found in Egypt’s Sakkara region. Archaeologists discovered a coffin in front of a crowd on Saturday (October 4). The mummy was seen opening the lid of the sealed coffins 2,500 years ago. The coffins are believed to contain the bodies of priests and priestesses.
Thousands of people gathered to see how the coffin was opened. Many people have taken that photo on their mobile phones. The video has gone viral on social media.
The Sakkara region had huge cemeteries in ancient times. The inhabitants of the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis were buried there. There are several famous pyramids in the area. The area was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980.
Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism said 59 wooden coffins had been found in Sakkara. The coffins are in good condition. Inside each coffin there is a mummy. The bodies of ancient Egyptian priests and other nobles were mummified and placed in those coffins. As soon as a coffin was opened on Saturday, the inside of the mummy was wrapped with a special type of ‘burial cloth’. Also, there are various ornaments on the body of the mummy.
“We are very happy with the discovery,” said Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities. The mummies inside the coffins are in perfect condition. This discovery is the best gift of the century for Egyptian researchers.
The coffins will be kept in the New Great Egyptian Museum in Giza. Visitors can go there and see the mummies.
