The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked Armenia to withdraw from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. Ali Akbar Belayeti, an adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, made the call on Tuesday.
“Just as we oppose Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory, we also oppose the Karabakh occupation,” he told the Iranian daily Keihan.
Ali Akbar Belayeti added: “Iran believes in respecting the geographical integrity of all countries. It is part of the principles of the UN Charter. We, as members of the United Nations, adhere to this principle. Azerbaijan and Armenia They are our northern neighbors. Armenia occupies the territory of neighboring Azerbaijan. They have occupied at least seven cities in southern Azerbaijan. The United Nations has four statements on this. All statements state that Armenia occupies a part of Azerbaijan. The statements ask that Armenia renounce its control over the international border.
Belayati said that Iran also wants Azerbaijani territory to return to the country. More than 1 million people in Azerbaijan have become refugees as a result of the occupation of these territories. We ask that you leave these areas quickly.
“We do not believe that there is a military solution to this problem,” he said. We have to move forward politically. Because the military approach is not good for anyone. Ordinary people are the most affected by the war. Residential areas are recently being shelled. It will not bring well-being to the people. The ongoing war is also detrimental to the security of the entire region. He asked everyone to come together to end the war.
