More than 10 mortars fired by Azerbaijan and Armenia have landed on Iran. Governor Ali Amiri Rad confirmed that the mortars fell in the Khoda Afarin district on the border with Iran. The country’s state news agency, Purse Today, reported Sunday. Governor Ali Amiri Rad said that more than 10 mortars had hit Iranian territory since the conflict began. These have reached non-residents and agriculture. Fortunately, no one died.

A source said an Iranian boy was injured in the mortar attack. Tehran has warned both countries to be vigilant about border violations. Armenian and Azerbaijani forces have been fighting for more than a week for control of the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif spoke by phone with the leaders of the two countries shortly after the border clashes began. They called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to establish an immediate ceasefire and hold talks in accordance with international law.

In the late 1970s, the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan broke out in the Karabakh region. The conflict culminated in the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991. Until the ceasefire was established between the two parties in 1994, 30,000 people lost their lives in the conflict. Although the Karabakh region is internationally recognized as a territory of Azerbaijan, it is controlled by the Armenian government of Armenian descent.
