The Turkish Chamber of Commerce has called on Saudi citizens to boycott all Turkish products. The head of the agency said it was the responsibility of all Saudi citizens to boycott everything in Turkey, including imports, investments and tourism. This was reported by Gulf News citing local media.
In a recent speech, without naming Saudi Arabia, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that some Arabian Gulf countries have targeted Turkey and are pursuing a policy of destabilizing the region. Following Erdogan’s remarks, the Saudi Arabian Chamber of Commerce called the country’s citizens.
In a speech to parliament on Thursday, Erdogan said: “It should not be forgotten that countries have been questioned; they did not exist yesterday and probably tomorrow they will not exist. But with God’s permission, our flag will continue to fly in this region forever.” .
There was a strong reaction to Erdogan’s statement. Following the statement, Azlan Al Azlan, director of the Saudi Arabian Chamber of Commerce, called for a boycott of Turkish products. “It is the responsibility of every Saudi businessman and consumer to boycott everything in Turkey, be it imports, investment or tourism, in response to the continued hostility of the Turkish government against our leadership, our country and our citizens,” he said in a tweet.
Turkey’s current economy is fragile. Thousands of Turkish exporters are expected to be in danger if the Saudi authorities follow the boycott policy. The 2016 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul has severely damaged relations between the two countries. Erdogan also threatened to sever ties with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, which recently signed an agreement with Israel to normalize relations.
