A court has sentenced two domestic workers to death in the murder case of the former head of Eden Women’s College Mahfuza Chowdhury Parveen. Today, Sunday, Dhaka trial court: Judge Abu Zafar. Kamruzzaman announced the verdict.

Before the verdict was announced, the police introduced Mahfuza Chowdhury’s maids, Rita Akhter alias Swapna and Ruma alias Reshma, in the courtroom at 1 pm. Then the judge began to announce the verdict in the presence of the accused. During the announcement of the verdict, said the state attorney (PP). Yasmin Chowdhury, younger sister of the late Mahfuza Chowdhury and her son Saniat Ismat Amit were sitting with Abu Abdullah Bhuiyan. They were sitting in court listening to the verdict. At one point in the verdict, the judge recounted how Mahfuza was killed. Hearing this, Mahfuz’s relatives began to cry in court. Others present consoled them.

After the verdict, the son of Mahfouz’s sister, Saniat Ismat Amit, told the media: “We have justice. He had faith in the law and order of the country, the government and the police administration. Today, through the verdict, it was confirmed again. Hopefully the verdict will go into effect soon.

According to the case file, Mahfuza Chowdhury was murdered on February 11, 2019 at her home on Elephant Road in the capital. The victim’s husband, Ismat Qadir, a former secretary general of the Chhatra League, filed a case with the Gamma New Market Police Station. The police subsequently took into custody domestic workers Swapna and Reshma and two domestic workers, Runu Begum.

Swapna and Reshma have confessed to the murder. On July 21, 2019, the investigating officer on the case, New Market (SI) Police Station Deputy Inspector Alamgir Hossain Majumder, filed a charge sheet against the two domestic workers. According to the charge sheet, the defendant killed Mahfuza by stealing 20 gold ornaments, a Samsung mobile phone and Rs 50,000 from the house.

The investigating officer requested the release of Runu Begum as no complaint was received against him. The court filed charges against the two defendants on February 9 of this year.

Mahfuza Chowdhury was the principal of Eden College from 2009 to 2012.
