The defendants have received the stamp or copy of the full 429-page verdict on the murder of Shahnawaz Rifat (Rifat Sharif) in Barguna. Upon reviewing pages 425, 426 and 428 of the judgment, the court found that Ayesha Siddique Minni, a witness in the case, was the mastermind behind the plot. That is why Rifat Sharif was killed and his parents had no children. Furthermore, all those sentenced to death have been treated equally as criminals.
The court’s observation read: ‘Rifat Faraji, Rabbi Akon, Sifat, Tiktak Hridoy, Md. Hasan and Minni killed Rifat Sharif by setting the date, time and place of the incident to fulfill the common purpose of killing him. It has been proven beyond any doubt that he has committed an offense punishable by article 34 of the Penal Code, including article 302.
The court said: “If some people commit a criminal act together, each of them will be equally responsible for that crime.” That is why all those convicted are equally guilty.
In the Minni case, the judge mentioned in his verdict that the defendant Minni was the mastermind behind the plot of the case. That is why Rifat Sharif had to be killed. Their parents must not have children. If he doesn’t receive exemplary punishment, there is a danger that his (Minni’s) teammates will be tricked into following in his footsteps. Therefore, it is appropriate to recommend their exemplary punishment in this case.
Rifat Sharif was shot dead in front of Barguna Government College on the morning of June 26 last year. The massacres shook the entire country. There, his forces, led by Nayan Bond, publicly pirated Shahnawaz Rifat (Rifat Sharif) and seriously wounded him. He died at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital that afternoon while in treatment.
Rifat’s father said the next day, June 26. Abdul Halim Dulal Sharif became the plaintiff, named 12 people and brought a murder case against 5-6 others. After that, the police arrested the accused one by one. Sabbir Ahmed Nayan aka Nayan Bond, the main defendant in the case, was killed in a shootout with police on the morning of July 2, six days after the Rifat attack.
Two months and six days after Rifat’s murder, on the afternoon of September 1 last year, the Barguna Judicial Court of First Instance processed 24 people and filed two investigative complaints, dividing them into adults and minors. Of these, 10 are juvenile offenders and 14 are minors.
The Barguna District and Sessions Judge established the position on January 1, 2020 to initiate the judicial process of the adult accused. The court began taking testimony against 10 accused adults on January 8 and completed testimony against 8 accused adults in the case on February 25. The discussion between the two parties ended on September 16. On September 30, 8 defendants, including Minni, were sentenced to death by the Barguna district and session judge. Ashaduzzaman. Those sentenced to death are Rakibul Hasan Rifat Faraji (23), Al Qayyum alias Rabbi Akon (21), Mohaiminul Islam Sifat (19), Rezwan Ali Khan Hridoy alias Tiktak Hridoy (22), Md.
