Rita Akhter aka Swapna and Mosammat Reshma Akhter aka Ruma, two maids from the Mahfuzar household, were found guilty of murder and sentenced to death in this verdict on Sunday. Judge Abu Jafar Mohammad of the Dhaka Kamruzzaman No.1 Rapid Trial Court.
The judge also sentenced the two defendants to seven years in rigorous prison and fined them Taka 25,000 for theft.
Mahfuza Chowdhury was the principal of Eden College from 2009 to 2012. He was assassinated on February 11, 2019 at his home on Elephant Road in the capital.
According to the charge sheet produced by the police on July 21 of that year, two maids, Swapna and Ruma, killed Mahfuza by stealing 20 ounces of gold, a mobile phone and 50,000 rupees in cash.
Looking at the verdict, the judge said that such crimes can only be prevented with exemplary punishment. These heinous murders must not be repeated. The defendant in this case cannot get any sympathy.
The judge said: “Housewives Mosammat Reshma Akhter alias Ruma and Rita Akhter alias Swapna must not be misled by anyone else, so the housewife and housewife must be very careful in keeping the maid in the house. House”.
Six points of instruction have been given for that warning in observing the verdict.
1. The domestic worker has to watch you closely for 90 days from the date of your appointment so that they do not escape by stealing valuables from the house. If a domestic worker commits a crime, she must report it to the police station or the appropriate social services officer without injuring herself or hitting her.
2. In case of having a maid, you should have detailed information. In this case, the biography and photographs of the domestic worker should be kept. It must be sent to the corresponding police station.
3. If there is no CC camera at the main entrance of the house, arrangements should be made to install the CC camera immediately.
4. If a maid employs another maid in a household, then her name and address must also be kept at the appropriate police station.
5. Task providers must obtain a license and report company activities to the police station. If there is no license, the activities of that company must be stopped.
. The maid providing organization must send the photos and resume of its registered maid to the police station.
Explaining the context of this, the judge looked at the 15-page verdict and said that recently in the capital cheating under the guise of a domestic worker has been happening frequently. These scammers plan their activities mainly targeting elite areas.
“The scammers steal money, mobile phones, watches, gold ornaments, etc. in the name of working in different groups and messes in different areas, including the capital of Bangladesh, and they escape with the goods, rendering the occupants unconscious or killing them.
The judge noted that following the recent rise in gold prices, the number of domestic workers fleeing their homes with gold ornaments or valuable mobile phones and cash has increased.
A court sentenced two domestic workers, Rita Akhter, alias Swapna, and Ruma, alias Reshma, to death for killing the former head of Eden College, Mahfuza Chowdhury Parveen.
In the verdict, he said, these scammers have a few members and a team leader. The team leader assigns a home to each member. A portion of the money from the sale of fraudulent items must be paid to the team leader.
“These scammers kill household members by taking sleeping pills and rendering them unconscious or suffocating. Some organizations are also cheating in the name of providing domestic workers at home. People in the capital are being harassed even though their names are trapped in these institutions.
“Fleeing the eyes of the doorman or other people, they fled in a bucket or bag full of garbage or wearing a burqa, valuable mobile phones or other items, including ornaments or cash.”
The judge said that the murder of the former head of Eden College, Mahfuza Chowdhury Parveen, was a “brutal, heinous, demonic, brutal, barbaric and sensational” murder.
The verdict said that the plaintiff in the case, Ismat Qadir Gama, was a freedom fighter and his wife, Professor Mahfuza Chowdhury, was a “pioneer of women’s education”. They lived on the second floor of a duplex house in Sukanya Tower in the New Market area. And the cooking was done on the ground floor. The defendant Ruma, Swapna and the witness Rasheda lived downstairs.
