Amid weeks of clashes between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces, new attacks began on Sunday in Stepanakart, the main city in the isolated Nagarno-Karabakh region.
A report sent by the AFP team from Stepanakart said there were many explosions.
Azerbaijani authorities say they have taken “countermeasures” in response to rocket attacks by Armenian separatists in Stepanakart.
Intense clashes broke out in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region on Saturday, in which Armenia acknowledged that they had suffered heavy casualties, and Armenian leaders in the region described it as a historic disaster.
Yerevan’s Defense Ministry says Azerbaijani separatist forces repulsed a fierce attack by Azerbaijani forces seven days after the decades-long conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated.
Armenia says that more than 51 separatist members have been killed and more than 240 on both sides.
Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said its forces had seized control of the new area, and President Ilham Aliyev said his forces had occupied the strategic village of Madagiz, placing important northern roads within their firing range. Both parties have claimed civilian casualties.
AFP reporters have seen crowds of many families in the border town of Goris, gathered here to reach Yerevan, 350 kilometers to the northwest.
