Indian Foreign Secretary Harshvardhan Sringla and Army Chief General Manoj Naravan will pay a one-day visit to Myanmar on Monday. During the visit, they will discuss with the Myanmar authorities, among other topics, the repatriation of Rohingya and the threat posed by Pakistan-based terrorist groups to Rohingya camps in Bangladesh.

The Daily Star correspondent in New Delhi quoted Indian diplomatic sources as saying.

Sources said Dhaka and New Delhi were concerned by reports that activists from the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LET) and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were operating in Rohingya camps.

During the visit, General Naravane and Sringla will discuss bilateral relations with Myanmar in detail.

The sources said the two countries could discuss a coastal shipping deal for Indian shipping from the Bay of Bengal to Mizoram State in northeast India via the Kaladan River via Myanmar’s Sittwe port.

The visit may also focus on strengthening security ties between the two countries, especially on the border to prevent insurgent groups and drug traffickers. Schringler is also expected to discuss cooperation in the energy sector.

The visit to Naravan and Schringler during the coronavirus epidemic comes at a time when China is trying to increase its influence over India’s neighbors.

This is the first visit by an Indian army chief outside the country amid tensions on the Indochina border.

General Naravane and Sringla will meet Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Laing and State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi.
