A 72-year-old woman was raped while performing aju in Munshiganj. The incident took place last Wednesday night (September 30) in the East-Shilmandi area of the municipality. The matter came to light on Saturday (October 2) when a case was filed at the police station.
The elderly woman was admitted to Munshiganj General Hospital for treatment on Saturday night. Charged with rape, Quader Sheikh is the son of the late Amir Sheikh from the same area and the nephew of Saidur Bhuiyan, Secretary General of the Awami League of Munshiganj City. The police arrested him at night.
According to police and local sources, the old woman left the house last Wednesday night to perform the ablution of Esha prayers. At that moment, drug addict Quader Sheikh, who was identified in the area, raped the old woman.
Quader left the old woman there in critical condition and fled. The old woman was later rescued. When the incident came to light, local leaders of the Awami League tried to cover up the matter by threatening to kill the old woman’s children.
The elderly woman was treated for the first time at her home on Thursday morning when her condition deteriorated. Later, a relative of the elderly woman working in Munshiganj Township was informed about the matter. The elderly woman’s relative informed the municipal mayor about the matter. After learning about the matter, the mayor advised to take legal action, ensuring that he would remain with the old woman.
The old woman was threatened with death if she left the house to file a complaint with the police on Saturday afternoon. Upon receiving the news, the police rescued the old woman in the afternoon and took her to the police station.
At the same time, the old woman filed a rape case with the Munshiganj Sadar Police Station. Anichur Rahman, the police officer in charge of Munshiganj Sadar, confirmed the matter.
He said they raped an old woman. A case has been filed in this regard. The person involved in the incident has been arrested. The rape victim has been admitted to Munshiganj General Hospital for treatment.
