Police arrested four people in connection with the mysterious death of Ulfat Ara Tinni, a recent graduate student from Islamic University (IU) in her room.
They were arrested on Friday night (October 2) in a case brought by Tinni’s mother, Halima Begum, under the Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children Act.
The deceased was identified as Ulfat Ara Tinni, daughter of the late Yusuf Ali from the village of Sheikhpara under Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah.
According to local sources, Tinni lived with her older sister and mother in their two-story house near Sheikhpara Bazar on the Islamic University campus, although she had a permanent residence in Yogipara under the Shailkupa Police Station in Jhenaidah. When Tinni was called on the second floor around 12 p.m. Thursday, they sprayed her from the inside. After shouting for a long time, there was no response from inside, in fact Tinni’s mother and older sister broke in and entered. At that moment they rescued Tinni from the gallows. When he was taken to Kushtia Sadar Hospital, the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Family members allege that on Thursday night (October 1), Minni’s ex-husband and three accomplices forcibly entered her home and destroyed it. They entered Tinni’s house and insulted her. Unable to bear the humiliation, Tinni committed suicide.
Tinni’s older sister, Minni, told reporters that Tinni went to Kushtia on Thursday for the wedding of one of his girlfriends. Tinni came home around 8pm. Around 10 p.m., her ex-husband Jamirul and his three accomplices suddenly attacked the house. Then, around 11 p.m., Jamirul and his associates returned home. Leaving the collaborators outside, they made their way into Tinni’s bedroom. Minni tried to get up from the ground floor of the house after hearing Tinni crying. But Jamirul’s partners went down. Soon after, when Jamirul left, his sister wrapped a scarf around her neck with a ceiling fan around 12 p.m. At one point, Tinni was rescued with the help of neighbors and taken to the Kushtia Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty pronounced him dead.
Minni alleged that Tinni had chosen the path of suicide because Jamirul had insulted his sister.
Meanwhile, Tinni’s classmates have claimed that the incident of Tinni’s death is mysterious. His classmates staged a sit-in at the main entrance to the campus on Friday afternoon demanding a proper investigation into Tinni’s death.
