On the fifth day of the ongoing war between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, another 54 members of both sides were killed. Russian news agency Interfax reported on Friday.
According to Interfax, 158 members of the military have so far been killed in the clashes, which began on Sunday.
Qatar-based Al Jazeera reports that fierce fighting broke out on the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia on Thursday.
The Azerbaijani Attorney General’s Office says a civilian was killed in an attack by Armenian troops in the city of Tarot, 90 kilometers from the Anagorno-Karabakh region. Azerbaijan and Armenia have a long-standing dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh, inhabited by Armenians. Before the 1994 ceasefire, the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia claimed some 30,000 lives. After that battle, the Nagorno-Karabakh region was occupied by Armenian separatists with the help of Armenia. In 2016, 110 people were killed in clashes in the area.
