The poisoning of the groom-bride has occurred as the people of both families do not accept the relationship. The incident took place in the Padma Bridge area of Unión Purbanaodoba in Jajira Upazila of Shariatpur. Lover died of poisoning. The groom fell ill and was admitted to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital.
Police from Jajira Police Station and Padma Bridge Project China Camp rescued them around 8:30 am on Thursday (September 1).
The police arrested Rubel’s friend Gautam Barai from Kotalipara upazila in Gopalang and Babul Lal Barai, son of the late Turipad Barai from Shashikar village in Kalkini upazila in Madaripur for questioning.
The deceased was identified as Aziza Akter, 18, daughter of Aynal Mollah from the Chobahanandi Madbarerkandi village under the Bikenagar union of Jajira upazila and a student of the XI class of Bangabandhu University College, Bikenagar. Her boyfriend Rubel Bagchi (20) is the son of Nikhil Bagchi from the Nayarbari village in Kotalipara upazila of Gopalganj.
According to the police and local sources, her boyfriend Rubel Bagchi works as a carpenter. In February, Rubel came to work as a carpenter at Aynal Mollah’s home in the Chobhanandi Madbarerkandi village of Bikenagar in Jajira upazila. Rubel Bagchi later fell in love with Aziza, the daughter of Ayzal Mollah.
In August, people from both families found out about their love story. The family did not accept them because the son was Hindu and the daughter Muslim. On Wednesday morning (September 30), Rubel came from Moktarpur to meet Aziza in the village of Chobhanandi Madbarerkandi in Bikenagar Union. Later, he spent the whole day sitting under a tree in the Padma Bridge project area at night and poisoned Rubel-Aziza.
“I’ve had a love affair with Aziz for eight months,” said her boyfriend Rubel Bagchi. But the family did not accept our relationship. That is why we have chosen the path of suicide by poisoning.
Jajira OC Police (investigation) Mintu Mandal said Rubel Bagchi was found unconscious and Aziza Akter was found dead Thursday morning. Subsequently, Rubel was admitted to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital.
The OC said Aziza’s body was sent to the Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Two people have been arrested in the incident. However, no complaint has yet been made to the Jajira Police Station. The incident is under investigation.
