A young woman was raped when she came to meet her ‘boyfriend’, who was introduced on her mobile phone. The incident took place at midnight on Wednesday (September 30) at a secluded location next to BGB’s Urmi restaurant near Laboni Point on Cox’s Bazar beach.
The girl alleged that she was raped by a young man named Osman Sarwar (28) who was operating a kitkut chair (tourist umbrella) on the beach. Police arrested the defendants after the case was shelved on Thursday (October 1) afternoon.
The arrested Osman Sarwar is the son of Abul Bashar from the Adarshagram area adjacent to Kalatali in the town of Cox’s Bazar.
Cox’s Bazar Sadar Police Officer in Charge (CO), Sheikh Munir-ul-Gias, confirmed the information.
Referring to the allegations, OC Munir-ul-Ghias said that the victim was identified by a man on a mobile phone. Building on this earlier acquaintance, she came from Chakaria to the Cox’s Bazar beach area on Wednesday afternoon to meet her boyfriend. The alleged lover’s mobile phone was found turned off after arriving at Cox’s Bazar beach. After a long wait, as evening approached, the young woman rented a Kitkat chair to sit on in the Laboni Point area of the beach. Osman took her to a secluded location around 12:30 pm and raped her.
The CO further said that the victim filed a written complaint with the police station Thursday morning. The defendant was arrested at Labani Point on Cox’s Bazar Beach at noon after receiving the complaint.
The girl’s complaint has been registered as a case against the young man accused for admitting the accusation during preliminary interrogation. The girl was admitted to the One Stop Crisis Center (OCC) at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, Munir-ul-Gias said.
