Bishop Vijay Nisphorus de Cruz de Sylhet has been appointed as the new archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church in Bangladesh.
The Communication Commission of the Archdiocese of Dhaka said in a press release Thursday.
The current archbishop, Cardinal Patrick de Rosario, will be replaced by Vijay Nisfaras de Cruz.
According to the press release, Patrick de Rosario has served as Archbishop of Dhaka since 2011. He was the first cardinal of Bangladesh. He recently petitioned the Vatican to resign as archbishop. Pope Francis, the supreme leader of the Catholic Church, agreed to his request and appointed Victor Nisphorus de Cruz as archbishop.
According to the rules of the Catholic Church, a bishop can apply for retirement at the age of 65. According to him, the current archbishop, Cardinal Patrick de Rosario, is past that age. However, he will continue to serve as cardinal, even if he resigns as archbishop.

The new archbishop, Vijay Nisphorus de Cruz, was born on February 9, 1956 in Old Tuital, Dhaka. He was ordained a priest on February 20, 1986. Vijay Nisfras de Cruz assumed the office of Bishop of Sylhet on July 7, 2011. Previously, he served as bishop in Khulna.
