Throat was given first. Rahul Gandhi, the son of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, fell to the ground after being pushed by Uttar Pradesh police. Then the arrest was made.
Earlier on the trail, Rahul began arguing with the police. “You are violating section 144,” the police officer on duty told Rahul. Rahul replied, “You are abusing section 144.”
A convoy of congressional leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi, set out for Hathras the same day to protest the death of a Dalit girl in gang rape and brutal torture. In the middle they got caught first. But also Rahul and Priyanka. They set out on foot with local leaders and activists towards Hathras. Rahul and Priyanka were accompanied by Adhir Chowdhury, a deputy of the Behrampur Congress and leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha. His convoy was stranded on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh highway.
Rahul and Priyanka had already announced that they would go to Hathras. But today, Thursday, the Yogi government issued section 144. Even then, the leaders of Congress did not cancel the program. The Rahul-Priyanka convoy was stopped on its way to Greater Noida. They got out of the car and started walking down the Uttar Pradesh-Delhi highway. Hathras is about 140 km from where Rahul and Priyanka were arrested.
Under the guise of the Uttar Pradesh police, Kovid is in control of the state. That is why the Rahul-Priyanka convoy has been stopped. A police officer said state entry controls had been imposed since Sept. 1 to prevent coronavirus infection. That control has been extended until October 31. He claimed that Corona affected many state police officers.
Fighting is raging across India over the death of a Dalit girl in Hathras due to gang rape and brutal torture. Memories of the Nirbhaya gang rape case in 2012 have come alive again. Opposition parties have already organized protests in various parts of the country over the Hathras incident. Congressional workers and supporters held a candlelit procession in Mumbai on Wednesday. A protest was also organized in Calcutta on Thursday. To strengthen that movement, the two leaders of Congress decided to go to Hathras.
On the other hand, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly condemned the incident and launched a scathing attack on the Yogi government and the BJP. He tweeted: ‘There is no language to condemn this barbaric and shameful act surrounding the Dalit girl from Hathras. My condolences to the family of the victim. Even more embarrassing is the fact that the body of a young woman was buried without the permission and presence of anyone from the family. This incident is bringing to light the real face of those who only give slogans to vote and promise long promises.
Hathras District Magistrate P Laskar had previously told ANI that they had no news of Rahul-Priyanka’s visit. He added that the district boundary has been sealed and section 144 has been issued in the area to avoid an ‘unpleasant situation’. Members of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to investigate the incident will meet with the family of the murdered girl on the same day, Lashkar said.
