Myanmar lied about Bangladesh at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly. Bangladesh rejected the statement and gave a strong response. Dhaka said: “Once again, we witnessed Myanmar’s blatant lies and fabricated statements.”
Samia Anjum, Director General of the United Nations Division in the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded to a statement by the Office of the State Legal Adviser under the Right to Respond to the UN, said Myanmar’s statement on the Rakhine state incident and the repatriation of Rohingya was not just a matter of solution; Something totally confusing. Bangladesh is totally rejecting these baseless accusations, lies and distorted information.
He said that Bangladesh flatly denied allegations that Myanmar was harboring terrorists. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh adheres to the zero tolerance policy towards terrorism, terrorist financing and any other form of terrorism. We do not allow terrorists to use our territory. Our track record of addressing all forms of terrorism while protecting human rights is appreciated across the board.
The representative of Bangladesh, Samia Anjum, added that Myanmar should look in the mirror. Myanmar’s record of inhumane treatment of ethnic minorities is not new. It is the policy of your state. They use repression to get their people out. This is encouraging the emergence of rebel groups there. The country has become a breeding ground for all kinds of crime.
He said that Bangladesh has always offered meaningful security cooperation. Myanmar has joined the blame game without showing any interest in this matter. When I’m lecturing here; At the time, a bloody conflict was raging in Rakhine State. Despite the international community’s call for a ceasefire, Myanmar continues to ignore it. Bangladesh is one of the first countries to join the ceasefire.
On the issue of repatriation, the representative of Bangladesh said that the Rohingya issue was not a bilateral issue. This is an internal Myanmar problem. Our Prime Minister has already said that the Rohingya crisis originated in Myanmar and they have to solve it. Bangladesh has been a victim because it is a neighbor. More than a million Rohingya have taken refuge in Bangladesh.
“We have repeatedly called for this crisis to be resolved through dialogue,” he said. Based on faith, we have reached an agreement with Myanmar. But apparently Myanmar is showing no interest in implementing the agreement. The facts are distorting to justify their genocide. The purpose of the Myanmar Minister’s unfounded accusations against Bangladesh is to avoid responsibility for the safe and dignified repatriation of Rohingya forcibly deported to Myanmar. Even a Rohingya is not interested in voluntarily returning because the environment is not conducive. Representatives of the international community and various UN agencies are witnessing it. We call on the Rakhine State to be open to international organizations, the United Nations, the media and interested countries to monitor the situation on the ground.
It added that it was not unknown in the forum that the International Criminal Court had held a detailed hearing on the reasons for the forced deportation of Rohingya from Myanmar in 2019. Attempts by the world to play down the atrocities in Myanmar have been witnessed during the hearing. The world has watched with frustration that Myanmar’s state councilor has refrained from referring to these people as Rohingya.
He said that today 11 lakhs of Rohingya are taking refuge in Bangladesh. These people from Myanmar were killed in the name of the operation in August 2016. The whole world is concerned about the brutality that has been perpetrated. There have been murders, rapes, house burning, the victims of which are a large number of women and children.
He said, what has Bangladesh done? We have saved people’s lives by opening the border. We did it out of belief. We have made a bilateral agreement to return them as neighbors. So far, not a single Rohingya has expressed a desire to return. Twice in November 2016 and August 2019, we were ready to assist in the repatriation process; But unfortunately, not a single Rohingya was able to admit that their concerns had been allayed, lest further torture be inflicted.
The Bangladeshi envoy also claimed that the Myanmar minister had claimed that 350 Rohingya had returned to Myanmar voluntarily. 350 out of 11 lakhs in three years? Even if we accept the demands of the Myanmar minister; The question is: who are those 350 people? Where are they? Does the return of 350 of the 1.1 million people indicate an improvement in the situation in Rakhine State? It is clear that not even a Rohingya from the camp is interested in returning. Why? Because they don’t trust Myanmar. They are worried about their lives. They do not know what awaits them in Myanmar. We continue to receive reports that the Rohingya are being segregated, discrimination continues, clean-up operations continue, residents are evacuated town after town.
Where will they return to?
“We urge Myanmar to refrain from lying and propaganda,” he said. Show your sincere goodwill to win back your citizens. Provide security to Rohingya homes. Myanmar must be assured that they will not die again if they return. They will not be raped again. You will not be tortured. Myanmar must take visible steps in this regard so that its citizens can voluntarily return to their homeland. It is not the responsibility of Bangladesh to bear the burden of Myanmar over and over again. We call on Myanmar to stop lying and to ensure the safety of the Rohingya so that they are guaranteed housing, education, health and livelihoods. We urge the international community to help Myanmar to achieve this. Bangladesh is ready to give back the Rohingya. Myanmar must demonstrate genuine political will to win back the Rohingya in order to earn the respect of the international community.
