Azerbaijan has demanded the disarmament of 2,300 Armenian soldiers in the ongoing fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. A statement from the country’s Defense Ministry said that members of the Armenian army had been killed or wounded in counterattacks by the Azerbaijani army in retaliation. The country has also demanded the destruction of a large quantity of opposition weapons and military equipment. Turkey’s state news agency Anadolu Agency reported. Please note that Turkey is supporting Azerbaijan in this conflict.
The old conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region resumed on September 26 (Sunday). Hundreds of people have died in recent days. On Tuesday, Armenia claimed that one of its fighter jets had been destroyed in a Turkish airstrike.
A statement from the Azerbaijan Ministry of Defense on Wednesday claimed that the Armenian army had attacked the Tartar region of Azerbaijan and destroyed its infrastructure. However, no civilians were injured. Later, the Azerbaijani army regained control of the region. Armenian forces and their military equipment are being evacuated from there.
A statement from the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan said that Armenia had around 13 military tanks and vehicles, more than 200 artillery and missile systems, around 25 air defense systems, six commander and observation posts, five weapons depots, about 50 tank destroyers and 5 anti-tank guns in the last days. It has been destroyed.
Although the Nagorno-Karabakh region is located within Azerbaijan, it is controlled by Armenian separatists under the auspices of the Yerevan government. In the late 1970s, conflicts began between Armenia and Azerbaijan for control of the region. The conflict culminated in the fall of the former Soviet Union in 1991. Until the ceasefire between the two parties was established in 1994, 30,000 people died in the fighting. Later in 2016 and early this year the two sides also became involved in the conflict.
