Among the nine was Ayesha Siddique Minni, wife of the murdered Rifat Sharif, who was released on bail. She appeared in court shortly before the verdict was announced. Minni was initially the main witness in the case, later also became the defendant in the case.
Government attorney Bhuban Chandra Hawladar expressed satisfaction with the verdict. However, Minni’s lawyer, Mahbub Bari Aslam, disappointed. They will appeal to the higher court against this verdict. That is what has been reported. Minni’s father, Mozammel Hossain Kishore, also said that they were not satisfied with the verdict and that they would go to the higher court.
Rifat was publicly shot and killed on June 26, 2019 on College Road in Barguna. A video of the incident was also released on social media. On July 2 of that year, Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayan Bond, the main suspect in the murder, was killed in an encounter with the police. In announcing the verdict on the same day, the court said the government had “proven” that Minni was involved in a “conspiracy” to kill her husband.

The others sentenced to death are Rakibul Hasan alias Rifat Faraji (23), Al Qayyum alias Rabbi Ankon (21), Mohaiminul Islam Sifat (19), Rezoan Ali Khan Hridoy alias Tiktak Hridoy (22) and Md. Hasan (19) 7 In addition , the six defendants have been fined 50,000 taka Musa (22), Rafiul Islam Rabbi (20), Sagar (19) and Kamrul Hasan Simun (21) were acquitted.
