On Tuesday, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry told the Global Times, China’s official newspaper, that China did not agree with the way India had illegally declared Ladakh as a union territory. The Foreign Ministry issued the statement after the remarks.

In 1959, Chinese Prime Minister Chou En-lai wrote a letter to then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to reduce tensions on the Ladakh border.
