Police arrested Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, the eighth defendant in a case of organized rape of a housewife in the dormitory of Sylhet MC College. He was arrested in Haripur in Jaintapur upazila de Sylhet around 12pm on Monday night.
The Kanaighat Police Officer in Charge (OC) said. Shamsuddoha confirmed the news. She said Masum was trying to flee to India. He was arrested in broad daylight on the basis of secret information.
Five defendants have been arrested in this sensational case. Additionally, two suspects are in the custody of RAB.
Meanwhile, the court sent Saifur Rahman, the main defendant in the racketeering case, Arjun Laskar, the fourth defendant, and Rabiul, the fifth defendant, for five days.
Saifur Rahman from Chhatak upazila from Sunamganj and Arjun Lashkar from Mantala area of Madhabpur upazila from Habiganj were arrested on Sunday morning. That night, two more defendants in the Shah case. Mahbubur Rahman Rony and Rabiul Islam were arrested in Habiganj. Rabiul was arrested at a relative’s home in Nabiganj upazila.
On the other hand, on the same day and night, the RAB arrested another defendant named Rajan from the Kachua Nayatila area of Fenchuganj upazila de Sylhet. He is one of three unidentified defendants in the case. A man named Ainul was arrested for providing shelter and cooperation to Rajan.
It was learned that a housewife went to MC College on Friday night to visit her husband. At that time, five to six people from the college campus were forcibly taken to the college dorm. They gang-raped the housewife while keeping her husband in a room there. The housewife was subsequently treated at the One Stop Crisis Center (OCC) at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Last Saturday, the husband of the housewife became the plaintiff in the case, mentioning the names of six people and charging three more unidentified people. The defendants in the case are Saifur Rahman (26), Shah Mohammad. Mahbubur Rahman Rony (25), Tareq (26), Arjun Laskar (25), Rabiul Islam (25) and Mahfuzur Rahman Mashum (25). Among them, Saifur Rahman is a resident of Balaganj upazila, Rony’s house is in Habiganj, Tareq is a resident of Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj, Arjun’s house is in Zakiganj of Sylhet, Rabiul’s house is in Dirai upazila of Sunamganj and Mahfuzt Rahman’s house in Syldarfuzt Upazila is in Sahdarhumur Mashman.
The six defendants in the case have been alleged to be BCL activists. In this regard, said OC Abdul Qayyum, six people have been accused of being directly involved in the case. However, the case statement did not mention them as BCL activists. The other three have been charged with complicity.
Previously, the police recovered firearms from the room of the defendant M Saifur Rahman. A firearm, four battering rams, a knife, and a GI pipe were recovered from Saifur’s room around 3 p.m. Friday.
